BERBERKAYA -  THE  BERBER ROCK

    Situated on the slope of a hill east of Ŭznik, the Berber Rock is a monumental grave  which was carved out of a single piece of rock. A grave which consist of a chamber having a triangular front and folded ceiling is said to have  belonged to the King of Bithynia, Prusias.
  Discovered by treasure hunters in 1953, who broke it open, it dates from  the 2ns century B.C. and it is an important example of Hellenistic period of Ŭznik.

BEŜTAŜ -  OBELŬSK

 

 
 

This monumental tomb  rises out of a vineyard which is locatedon the northern part of the city.Ŭt is also knownas "Beŝtaŝ", "Niŝantaŝŭ", "Dikilitaŝ".From the Greek inscriptions carved, it is understood that this tomb belonged to to C.Cassius Philiscus from the 1st century A.D.The monument rises on top a pedestal shaped like a rectangular prism.Five stones have been carved  into  triangular prism and placed on top of rectangular base.
It is thought that a sstatu of either an eagle or the God of Victory Nike was placed on top of what would have been the sixth stone.Traces  of a statu believed to by that of Philicus are found on one side of the monument, which stands 12 meters high.

SURLAR - THE CITY WALLS


    
 

 tThe city walls surrounding Ŭznik measure 4970 meters long , and were built in the shape of pentagon.Four gates can be seen when observed from the junction of the two main roads of the city.
 
 Construction started in the Hellnlstic Ages.During Roman and Byzantine times with some expantion the city  walls took their  present state as one of the oldest  witnesses of history.

 Ŭznik had always been under the threat os siege, whereas the city walls  were continuously  reconstructed.

 In the 8th century, the walls were strengthened  with the stones taken from the theater and additioanal towers were built.Two of the gates (lefkeGate , Constantinople Gate) are still in good condition.Yeniŝehir Gate is in particular ruins whereas nothing remains of Göl Gate.
